Symptoms

CAC works sometimes; other times the system fails to detect the card or drops it mid-session.

Likely cause

Dirty gold contacts on the CAC, a worn-out card, or a worn-out reader.

Fix

1. Wipe the gold chip with a clean pencil eraser to remove oxidation. 2. Try a known-good reader on the same machine - if it works, replace the original reader. 3. If a second reader also fails, the card itself is worn out - get it replaced at an ID card office.
